You can ask for reconciliation

In Misericordia et misera, paragraph 12, Pope Francis extended to all priests the faculty to absolve the sin of procured abortion. The same paragraph emphasizes both the seriousness of abortion and the possibility of receiving God’s mercy through repentance.

Do not assume that you are beyond forgiveness or that only a distant specialist can begin the conversation. Contact a Catholic parish or a priest you trust and explain that you would like to speak privately.

A simple way to begin

You might say: “Father, I want to confess my involvement in an abortion, and I need help talking about it.” If you are uncertain about your own involvement, say that plainly instead of forcing your experience into a description that does not fit.

You can ask for an appointment if you need more time. Describe your own actions and any circumstances the priest needs to understand. You do not need to put a detailed account in an email to arrange the meeting. Ask about accessibility, language or another practical need when making the appointment.

If your circumstances are complicated

Tell the priest about coercion, fear, uncertainty or other circumstances that matter to what happened. This page does not determine individual culpability or any canonical consequences. A priest can help you understand the appropriate sacramental steps and obtain further guidance when needed.

Do not use an online checklist to decide that a particular penalty automatically applies to you. Start with a real pastoral conversation and allow room for questions you cannot settle on your own.

Project Rachel and continuing support

The USCCB identifies Project Rachel as a Catholic ministry in the United States for people who have been involved in abortion. Its official information points to local help and to Spanish-language resources. Support can be useful before or after confession, according to what you need.

Use the official links below to find current contact options. Outside the United States, your diocese can help identify a local ministry. Participation in a particular retreat or program is not a substitute for arranging the sacrament.

Take the next step at your own pace

Choose one concrete action: contact a parish, arrange an appointment, or read the official support information. If you make a private note, keep only the words you need to begin.

After confession, follow the priest’s guidance and complete your penance. Continuing to seek pastoral or other appropriate support does not mean that you must repeatedly confess something already honestly confessed and absolved.
